In India, film stars have the status of demi-gods! The public is to blame for this of course, but having been given this hallowed position in society, the stars have assumed that they are above the law.
In our star-struck country this may work but not obviously in the US. I am extremely glad that Sharukh Khan was detained and questioned. He possibly expected a posse of his fans to come to him for his autograph, but instead he felt miffed that the US authorities quickly took him in for some kind of questioning. Why, even Dr. Kalam, our ex-president, was detained for questioning, and while the Indian government was fuming about it, it could do very little because the US said that they make no exceptions of anyone if they have to implement a law.
And above all, Dr. Kalam, being the ex-president of the country, raised no objections. So Mr. Khan you are a “mere” Indian film star, and you can’t expect to be treated any differently. If you feel “insulted” just boycott the US, if you have the courage to forego the huge money you earn every time you go there.
Whether we like it or not, if we are visiting another country we are bound by their rules, however harsh they may seem to us. Mr. Khan is probably under the impression that his fame would have preceded him, and he would have been given a right royal welcome! Sorry, Mr. Khan, in the US even Bob Dylan, who is a household name, was detained recently and asked for his identification papers. Although he said he is “the Bob Dylan”, the police officer insisting on seeing his ID papers.
That the MEA should intervene for Mr. Khan in such a situation is absolutely preposterous! Would it do the same for any other Indian citizen? We have to understand that in the US a rule is a rule and a law is a law, and they in fact make an example of celebrities when they break laws. Paris Hilton, a millionaire heiress, was put behind bars for 2 weeks for merely violating a parole condition!
The next time around I hope our film stars come down from their high horse and accept that they are mere mortals and not above the law of any country!
